Shiraz, the two best barrels thereof, one newAmerican and one new French. Sourced from two vineyards in Marananga with Block 1A fruit having a source of fruit for Penfolds Grange a number of times. There’s 5% cabernet sauvignon in the mix, too. Deep, impenetrable crimson in the glass with notes of opulent blackberry, cassis, kirsch and black cherry with hins of fruitcake spice, licorice, rum and raisin chocolate, vanilla, cedar and earth. Substantial gravel dust tannins here and impressive fruit depth and flow as the wine exits in a black, spicy tide. Please use the correct lifting technique when pouring this wine, as the bottle weighs a tonne. Dave Brookes 2 Aug 2023

2020 Paul Mara Estates Areti Maranga Shiraz, Barossa Valley – South Australia Deep colour. Superb intense dark plum, blackberry dark chocolate aromas with roasted chestnut, aniseed notes. Extraordinarily concentrated and voluminous wine with deep set dark chocolate blackberry flavours, superb new oak integration, velvety textures and integrated fresh acidity. Finishes cedar firm with supple long dark berry fruits and mocha notes. Plush, complex and powerful yet surprisingly refined and balanced. This is distinctively Penfoldsian in style yet daring in selection and concentration. It’s built to last with all the richness, density and detail for long term aging. It must come as no surprise that the fruit sourcing is about as alpha as one can get. Paul Mara’s Block 1A is ground zero of the Marananga sub-region and Nietschke’s Paradigm Vineyard material is classic. Paul Georgiadis is one of the region’s finest viticulturalists and Jason Barrette is a brilliantly talented winemaker having notched up several vintages with the Penfolds team in South Australia and with Nicole Rolet at Chène Bleu in France. This is a blockbuster style (with a heavy bottle), but the wine is beautifully made reflecting its outstanding provenance. Cork seal. 95% Shiraz 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Only 800 bottles made. Drink 2028 – 2045 14.5% alc

Erin Larkin Sept 2022

In a lineup of wines that could be classified by their overweight bottles, this 2020 ARETI Marananga Shiraz is the king of them all. High quality but extremely heavy glass shelters this wine, and is perhaps upsuprisignly, a sign of what’s in the bottle. This is concentrated, bloody, plush and concentrated, and the oak proclaims its position at the top of the tree too. This is a big, powerful wine that needs time to settle into itself but that has along future ahead. 800 bottles produced Erin Larkin Sept 2022

The 2020 growing season was dry with winter and spring rains being well below average.

Flowering unfortunately was interrupted with frosts and very strong winds, coupled with very cold nights. December was hot and dry with 11 days over 35C and 8 days over 40C. As a result, bunch size was below average with smaller than normal berry size. A mild February with approximately 20mm of rain on 1st February slowed down phenological ripening allowing us to hang the grapes to ensure full flavour ripeness, whilst retaining natural acidity. Yields across the board were down between 50-80% depending on the vineyard. Wines produced, have saturated colours, intense aromatics and great flavour concentration and length. Overall an exceptional year!

Vineyard Selection

This fruit is sourced from our two vineyards located the heart of Marananga on the renowned western ridge of the Barossa Valley, where the soils are predominantly red-brown loams over red clay, amidst shattered ironstone and quartz.
