2020 DeNero Nero d’Avola


Tasting Evaluation
Ruby red dark core with crimson rim. Lifted aromas of blueberry crumble, dark plum and Asian spices. Subtle wafts of violets, lavender, crème brulee and mocha notes. Forest fruits of wild strawberry and raspberry are dominant. Crunchy red apple skin acidity provides freshness and vibrancy.

Vintage Conditions
The 2020 growing season was dry with winter and spring rains being well below average. Flowering unfortunately was interrupted with frosts and very strong winds, coupled with very cold nights. December was hot and dry with 11 days over 35C and 8 days over 40C. As a result, bunch size was below average with smaller than normal berry size. A mild February with approximately 20mm of rain on 1st February slowed down phenological ripening allowing us to hang the grapes to ensure full flavour ripeness, whilst retaining natural acidity. Yields across the board were down between 50-80% depending on the vineyard. Wines produced, have saturated colours, intense aromatics and great flavour concentration and length. Overall an exceptional year!

Vineyard Selection
The fruit is sourced from 8 rows of our estate grown Nero d’Avola, planted in 2012, located in Marananga in the Barossa Valley.

The grapes were hand-picked at optimal ripeness and crushed to Pearle oak open top fermenters. The wine underwent a natural fermentation with hand plunging 3 times daily until the completion of fermentation. The wine was then pressed through a small hand basket press and filled to neutral French oak 300L hogsheads for 10 months. The wine completed natural malolactic fermentation in barrel with no SO2 used until bottling.

The wine was neither fined, nor filtered.
